Date 13 June, 2017
Subject Radio Backpack nominated
This backpack contains a mini radio station as well as a mini database that makes the data accessible which is necessary to predict upcoming disasters such as tsunamis or volcano outbursts.

The Radio Backpack project of former Age of Wonderland fellow Iman Abdurrahman and Studio Joris de Groot is selected by WSIS (World Summit on the Information Society) as Champion for category 12 e-environment. The mobile radio station functions as a mini-database by collecting and sharing data to predict future natural disasters such as tsunamis and volcanic eruptions. This is just one step away to winning the major prizes. The announcement of its main winner will be during the WSIS Forum 2017, 12-16 June, in Geneva.

During Age of Wonderland 2016 Iman Abdurrahman and Studio Joris de Groot developed a radio station in a backpack, made out of water- and fireproof lightweight materials and powered by long-lasting batteries and mini solar panels. This backpack contains a mini radio station as well as a mini database that makes the data accessible which is necessary to predict upcoming disasters such as tsunamis or volcano outbursts. Abdurrahman’s Backpack Radio Station can be a life saver for people living in one of the remote communities on the over 17.000 islands of Indonesia, who have no access to information and communication through ICT.
